a. Agroecology -
Embraces agro-ecological farming practices to enhance food security among target communities. This entails enhancing communities’ adaptive capacity to effects of climate change through identification of the local indigenous crop varieties that are more nutritious, resilient to little rainfall and less fertile soils, promotion of agro-forestry, organic farming and livelihood diversification among the small holder farmers. Focus is also on sustainable land use, soil protection and restoration and water management practices.
Climate change is the main threat to a community's well-being. Poor governance of natural resources, unsustainable land use practices such as overgrazing, uncontrolled de-vegetation, environmental pollution, destruction of water catchment areas, inefficient use of natural resources and encroachment of critical ecosystems are on the rise. These have affected environmental integrity and the ability to provide goods and services to the dependent communities. GDI Kenya works with the local community conservation groups, Community Forest Associations (CFAs), youths and women groups and build their capacity to undertake sustainable management of natural resources. GDI Kenya also collaborates with other likeminded CSOs, County and national government natural resource management departments in promoting environmental conservation and protection initiatives that are geared towards climate change mitigation and adaptation.
GDI Kenya focuses on building capacity of communities on agroecological practices and have training on a chain of these agro-ecological products value addition. The value addition training is tailored to youth, women, and persons with disabilities. Also, the beneficiaries are linked to mentors in the business field to walk with them as they establish sources of income.
